It seems pretty obvious to me that children who come from parents that treat them with respect, support them in making decisions and love them unconditionaly will help contribute to a more peaceful world. How can we continue to create awareness?

Robin Grille, an Australian therapist and child advocate, wrote "Parenting for a Peaceful World" in 2005. Grille's website is <www.our-emotional-health.com>.
Grille documents that German childrearing was even more brutal than in the rest of Europe during the time Hitler and others who became Nazis were raised. Here is a brief summary:
The most popular childrearing books of the time advocated such treatment. When Hitler was a child, "German child-suicide rates were three to five times higher than in other western European countries. Investigations revealed that the most common cause of suicide was the children's terror of their parents' severe corporal punishment."
Nazi police were among the most brutal and sadistic, reflecting the legacy of German child abuse. They were "rarely content with mere murder; they toyed with their victims in the most bizarre and macabre ways".
While most would-be Hitlers never find the degree of support necessary to take power, "The anti-child climate that existed before World War II accounts for why Hitler was able to count on more than just a handful of followers....At the very least, Hitler benefited from an appalling public toleration or non-reaction to his many explicit promises of violence. He was tacitly aproved of or altogether ignored by large sectors of the public who were too accustomed to seeing brutal 'fathers' as nothing out of the ordinary."
One particularly compelling study compared people who risked their lives to rescue Jewish people versus those who, though having sympathy for their plight, did nothing. The two groups proved to be alike in all ways except one: how they were raised as children:
"Rescuers reported that their parents had placed much less emphasis on 'obedience'. They tended to describe their relationship with their parents as closer and warmer. Both groups reported being 'disciplined' by their parents with equal frequency, but the parents of rescuers has used non-violent methods of 'discipline'. Rescuers reported having been beaten a lot less as children, and certainly not with objects such as rods, wooden spoons, or birches."
Grille did express concern about USA parenting, but did not make such clear connections between that and USA policies as he did for Nazi Germany. That's partly why i asked. We need to know as much as we can about those connections, so we can better do something about the direction our country is headed.

Richa-Not familiar with Grille's work. Could you provide more information...What were the parenting characteristics of Nazi supporting and resisting parents. Does he/she have an opinion about current US parenting and consequences?

Alfie touched on cultural differences. It would be interesting to discuss this further.

Robin Grille maintains that parenting is THE key factor that determines what kind of a society we have. His most powerful example (in his book "Parenting for a Peaceful World") referred to Nazi Germany. Comparing those who supported the Nazi, in and outsite of Germany, with those who resisted, they were found to be alike in every way but one - how they were parented.
I'd like to know what research, examples, etc. exist, if any, that show such connections for the type of parenting that Kohn and Grille and some others advocate. I'm especially interested for our present USA society.
